Fallen Angel

Fallen AngelFallen Angel by Heather Terrell

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Initial reaction after reading: hmm… not bad but I don’t like it that much.

I admit I really do love paranormal genre especially any story that involves angels/fallen angels. So when I see Fallen Angel in the bookstore, I picked it up even though I haven’t heard much about it. I am pretty much excited to read it too.

Now about the story plot, it’s just the basic and simple story about a girl (Ellie) who is an outcast but she has no idea that she is special. Then a new, hot student (Michael) got interested with her. Now she realizes that she has powers beyond her imagination. That both Ellie and Michael shares those powers. And then they found out that their parents are keeping secrets from them. And soon they will learn that someone “bad” wants something from them, that they will play a bigger role/part on doomsday. Sounds typical right?

Honestly, even though I’ve read so many books that generally have the same plot, I still love reading them. And I don’t have problem with Fallen Angel story. Actually the plot has a potential to be a good one. My main concern on this is how it was written. The characters are not well developed; the romance aspect seems so awkward and fell flat to me. And the writing has no sparks or life. The ending is just terrible. Actually it is not really that bad, but for me it is just lame. So all in all, this book is slightly an ok read.

Elsewhere

ElsewhereElsewhere by Gabrielle Zevin

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Initial reaction after reading: Wow! Breathless, still crying…

This is a story about Liz, who at the age of 15 died due to an accident. She is having a hard time accepting the fact that she is now dead. Then she has to deal with the new reality in her life, in a place called Elsewhere . In Elsewhere, she will live her life in reverse, wherein everyone there is getting younger, instead of getting older. Now Liz will need to let go of her previous life and must learn to embrace her new one.

I love the characters in this book. All of them have imperfections, but from those imperfections we will definitely learn a lot. The plot is splendid! a very unique one. I am so amazed in the world Gabrielle Zevin created, I wouldn’t mind living in it. The journey of Liz in Elsewhere is such a fascinating read. I love the irony of how she became more matured as she gets younger.

A once in a lifetime experience, Elsewhere is definitely a world I would like to revisit over and over again. Never had I thought that reading this will bring such pleasure and a thought-provoking one too. A little bit sad at the end though but at the same time gave us a new hope and beginning.

  • Jekel loves Hyde by Beth Fantaskey (love her 1st book Jessica's Guide, and I love her writing style, so definitely this one is must read for me)

Wake Unto Me

Wake Unto MeWake Unto Me by Lisa Cach

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Wake Unto Me is a story of an ordinary girl (Caitlyn) who is having a freakish nightmare. She wanted something different in her life so when she received an invitation/scholarship to study in a French boarding school, she immediately jump in to the idea. There she discovered a lot about herself and the mysteries surrounding her dreams. She met a very gorgeous guy Raphael, who haunts her in her dreams. And of course, they fell in love. Instalove should I say. And also somehow she discovered that she is a lot special than what she thought she is. Sounds familiar right?

Well although the plot of this story is too similar with the other paranormal/fantasy genre books that I’ve read, I still kind of like reading it, but just a little bit. Be warned that this is definitely a slow paced book. I think that the story only got interesting when I reached the final 100 pages. I nearly gave up on this, but in the end I decided to just finish reading it and be done with it.

Now the writing style is pretty ok, I like the historical aspects of the story. She did in fact incorporate the info about The Knights Templar and the missing treasure in the story but I don’t think it was explored well. I need more details, but sadly it was not delivered. It is a pretty well wrapped-up but found the ending a little bit rushed and too conventional. It was like she did that just to have a happy ending but I found it awkward and unrealistic. Though I must admit that I am pretty much surprised about the mysteries of Caitlyn’s life when it was finally revealed, I sure didn’t expect that.

If you want a paranormal, ghost story with a touch of history, go ahead and give it a try.

Sweetly (Sisters Red, #2)

Sweetly
Jackson Pearce
August 23, 2011

Summary:

SWEETLY is a modernization of Hansel and Gretel and a companion book to SISTERS RED.

Twelve years ago, Gretchen, her twin sister, and her brother went looking for a witch in the forest. They found something. Maybe it was a witch, maybe a monster, they aren’t sure—they were running too fast to tell. Either way, Gretchen’s twin sister was never seen again.

Years later, after being thrown out of their house, Gretchen and Ansel find themselves in Live Oak, South Carolina, a place on the verge of becoming a ghost town. They move in with Sophia Kelly, a young and beautiful chocolatier owner who opens not only her home, but her heart to Gretchen and Ansel.

Yet the witch isn’t gone—it’s here, lurking in the forests of Live Oak, preying on Live Oak girls every year after Sophia Kelly’s infamous chocolate festival. But Gretchen is determined to stop running from witches in the forest, and start fighting back. Alongside Samuel Reynolds, a boy as quick with a gun as he is a sarcastic remark, Gretchen digs deeper into the mystery of not only what the witch is, but how it chooses its victims. Yet the further she investigates, the more she finds herself wondering who the real monster is, and if love can be as deadly as it is beautiful.

Guardian of the Gate

Guardian of the Gate (Prophecy of the Sisters, #2)Guardian of the Gate by Michelle Zink

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

It's an ok book though I am expecting that there will be a “shocking” revelations and more adventure on this one. But unfortunately there is no improvement on the plot. Basically almost the same with “Prophecy of the Sisters”. We all know that Samael is evil, that Alice is bad. But I’m not feeling it; I’m not creep out of my bones. And what the heck? Another instalove with Dimitri? I just don’t get it, Lia doesn’t even know him. She just met him once and then when she saw Dimitri at the forest or river or whatever they immediately had an instant connection? Aaahhh, I don’t like it. But I admit Dimitri is kind of sweet. And what about James? Does Lia does not even care about him anymore.

I will still read Circle of Fire because I want to know what will happen to this story. And I need to know more about Alice. Her character was not exposed and explored that much that she is still a stranger to me. Hoping that the final installment in this series will shock me to the core...

Forgotten

ForgottenForgotten by Cat Patrick

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

ratings: 4.5 stars

Forgotten is the most memorable and intriguing book that I’ve read so far. Who wouldn’t be intrigue? London Lane can see her future in flashes but she can’t remember her past. That alone arouses my curiosity. And Cat Patrick didn’t disappoint. London’s life captivated me so much, the story is so realistic. It is kind of similar to the movie “50 first dates” wherein Drew Barrymore loses her memory. Yes it is similar but the uniqueness of this story is how London can see her future. And who would ever forget Luke, who endured everything for London. Every day he surprises London with his simple acts, like bringing coffee and stuffs every morning. You will be surprised how sweet and wonderful Luke is at the middle of the story. Oh! I want my own Luke too!

I am engaged and enthralled in the story that it actually left me breathless for quite awhile. Words are not enough to explain how awesome this book was. I so love it. It is definitely an engaging read that I will revisit sometime soon.

Sisters Red

Sisters RedSisters Red by Jackson Pearce

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Sisters Red is one of the most fascinating stories that I’ve read recently. As we all know it is a retelling of “The little red riding hood” but I didn’t expect that the story will be a lot better. The story revolves around Scarlett and Rosie March, two sisters who had been a victim of a Fenris attack. Fenris is a werewolf who haunts and kills girls. Because of the attack, their grandma was killed and Scarlett protected Rosie from that attack, and she lost her eye and scarred her face as a result. And after that Scarlett and Rosie became great werewolf slayers, but Rosie lacks the passion that Scarlett has. Silas Reynolds played a role in the story that I never expected. And I adore Silas and Rosie budding romance, just right and sweet.

I really enjoyed reading Sisters Red, a simple story yet enchanting. I love the plot and the characters. The twist in the story is astounding. It is an action packed story that will leave you breathless. And I am really satisfied in the ending, just right. This is my first Jackson Pearce novel and I can’t wait to read her other work.
